Step by Step

One step at a time...

I feel my feet land on the earth, carrying me from one moment to the next, one experience to the next, one interaction to the next.

One hand over my heart, one hand over my navel and I remind myself of that feeling of centeredness; I close my eyes and breathe into the wisdom of the body. I listen to the information present in the pause.

One breath at a time I slow down the ongoing chatter creating all sorts of narratives within my mind. Slowly, over time, the breath cuts through these fluctuations, evening out the waves of thought that keep me lost in my own drama.

It's easy to get lost in distraction and to fill time and space with all of the constant doing. It's easy to be stuck in the whirlwind of everyday life, trying to keep up with all of the responsibilities and tasks. It's easy to forget to pause; to take in the smell of the air, the colors of nature and the embrace of the breath. And yet, this is what yoga asks of us time and time again: to come present to each moment as it arises and to pause long enough to feel these moments fully.

When I lose sight and lose my way, I do whatever I can to hit pause. I try to drop the doing, the analyzing, the questioning, the doubting and instead drop into the breath that sustains  and inspires me, the beauty that surrounds me and the present moment that can only occur in stillness and silence. I take my shoes off and bury my feet in the grass, the dirt, the sand -- whatever it may be -- to bring a sense of ground into my system; to remind myself to slow down and start from the beginning, one blissful breath and one soft step at a time.

Wherever you are today, this week, this month, this year, I invite you to find *brief* moments of pause every single day, whether on your yoga mat or not. Amidst all of the searching, gripping and grasping, can you find your breath, feel your center and turn all of that external attention inwards: step-by-step, moment-by-moment, breath-by-breath...

With Love & Light,

Lauren Cohen
